Fragile Transparency

One day I will look back into this fog
and I won't see a damaged forest.
I'll tell myself it's perfect
like in my dreams.

Now, I add detail and color
to a black and white image of paradise
after a devastating storm.

I use watercolors and pastel chalk,
blend and rub -- make it look real.

Real enough to climb inside
and touch the hologram
of a hollow existence.

I'm a woman in a bubble
floating, bracing myself
for the inevitable pop.

I liked landing in your hands
without rupturing this thin membrane.

I wish I could have stayed there,
but the wind had other plans.

I'm scared of landing again,
because I know it is unlikely
my world will survive point of contact.
